COVID-19: Government Dispels Rumours of Another School Lockdown

The government of Cameroon, through the minister of Communication, has declared as unfounded, rumours that plans are underway to shutdown schools again due to a resurgence of the Coronavirus.

Minister René Emmanuel Sadi was speaking at a joint press conference today in Yaounde, which was also attended by the Minister of Public Health, Manaouda Malachie, and the Delegate General for National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguele.

During the press conference meant to inform the public of the epidemiological situation of Cameroon, one year after the first case of the virus was detected in the country, the government spokesman announced that as of now, the country has recorded a total of 35,714 positive cases, 22, 594 recoveries, 551 deaths, while there are 2,672 active cases with 53 under breathing assistance.

He added that within the last two months, the country has recorded a total of 9,976 new cases of the virus and 105 deaths.
The members of government blamed the rapid rise in new cases on the non-respect of barrier measures, delays in going for testing and treatment, lack of systematic testing in health facilities, and the continuous denial of the presence of the virus in Cameroon.

Public Health Minister, Manaouda Malachie, hinted during the press conference that government may resort to vaccination in order to check the rapid spread of the pandemic in the country if new cases continue to increase exponentially.

For his part, the Delegate General for National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguele, enjoined the population to show proof of self-discipline for it is practically impossible to assign a police officer behind every Cameroonian to constantly remind them to respect barrier measures.
He also pleaded with bike riders and taxi drivers to help in the fight against the pandemic by obliging all their passengers to wear face masks.
