Coup d’Etat in Myanmar

The military in Myanmar has seized power this Monday morning, after arresting the country’s civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and other senior members of her governing party, the National League of Democracy.
The coup d’état comes after a landslide victory in an election held last November, which the army alleges was marred by fraud.

The office of the Army chief, Min Aung Hlaing said the decision is in response to claims of voter fraud and that the military would organize free and fair general elections after a one-year state of emergency is over.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, was ruled by the military until 2011, when democratic reforms led by Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi ended military rule.
