Uefa Champions League Final 2019: Tottenham Hotspur Will Face Liverpool Fc, 100% English Affair
The Spurs overturned a 3-0 deficit as they were led 2-0 at half time plus the away leg goal at the end of the first half. The Boys of Mauricio Pochettino fought back during the second half and Lucas Moura scored a hat-trick to hand qualification to Tottenham Hotspur at the expense of Andre Onana and Ajax of Amsterdam. The final of the 2019 UEFA Champions League will therefore oppose two English Premier League giants, Tottenham Hotspur versus Liverpool FC on Saturday, 1st June, 2019 at Madrid in Spain.
It was another dramatic football night in Europe this Wednesday, 8th May, 2019. The semi finals return leg pitting Ajax of Amsterdam against Tottenham Hotspur was taking place at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, Holland. In the away leg that was played last week at the new White Hart Lane in England, it was Andre Onana and his teammates that went home smiling after beating Tottenham 1-0. The drama continued this evening as 19 years old Matthijs De Ligt headed in the first goal for Ajax at the 5th minute of play. At the 36th minute of play, Moroccan international, Ziyech Hakim doubled the lead for Ajax as the Dutch Champions now led Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 on aggregate.
Upon return from the resting rooms, Tottenham Hotspur kept pushing forward and mounting pressure on the Ajax defenders. Andre Onana made some spectacular saves but the English visitors kept coming back. Exactly ten minutes into the second half, Lucas Moura reduced the goal tally for Spurs. Four minutes later, he netted in the second goal for the Spurs after Ajax stopper, Andre Onana successfully punched out a dangerous ball but poor communication with his defender, Lasse Shöne failed to clear the danger zone. Moura wasted no time and opportunity and corrected the mistake immediately.
As the score line read 2-2 for the night, Ajax of Amsterdam was still in the best position to qualify as they were leading 3-2 on aggregate. Ziyech Hakim tried to score the third goal for Ajax but unfortunately hit the post instead. It was in the last seconds of the match that Lucas Moura took goalkeeper Andre Onana, Ajax of Amsterdam plus all the supporters of the Dutch team unawares as he scored the winning goal for the visitors. Spurs Manager, Mauricio Pochettino could not hold back his emotions any longer. He let the tears of joy flow as he and all Tottenham fans all around the world went into wild celebrations.
Like Liverpool FC, Tottenham Hotspur came back from the land of the dead in the UEFA Champions League Semi Finals to qualify for this year’s final. It’s also interesting to note that they played without their star player, Harry Kane on injury. Whatever happens in the final, the most prestigious trophy on the European continent will be taken to England. It is certainly going to be a very long night for Ajax Manager, Erik ten Hag who was very optimistic before the match but unfortunately gave away the 3-0 lead to a hungry Spurs team. It was simply a devastating night of football for Ajax team and supporters, the kind of bitter pills that FC Barcelona swallowed yesterday in Anfield. The English Premier League is simply the best in Europe.
