Uefa Champions League 2019: Liverpool Fc Stage Another Historical Comeback
Incredible. The Reds overturn a 3-0 deficit against Lionel Messi’s Barcelona and qualify for the finals 4-3 on aggregate. In the absence of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, Origi and Wijnaldum stepped up to score a brace each, completely devastating the Spanish giants and their supporters all around the world. It was not however their first comeback. They did it in 2005 against AC Milan in the final.
What a night of football drama in Europe! It will take a very long time for any football lover to forget this fairy tale night. FC Barcelona are out of the UEFA Champions League for 2019. They crash out of the competition at the semi finals stage after Liverpool FC successfully staged a historic comeback in the history of European football. When the Reds conceded three goals in Spain last Wednesday, 1st May, 2019, many football observers thought it was game over for them.
The return leg was considered by many as a mere formality. Certainly, only those who believe in miracles could dare to believe that Liverpool could still turn the tables and score four goals without conceding any in Anfield. However, from the first minute of play, the Boys of Liverpool Manager, Jüggen Klopp made their intentions clear. They came to win and comfort their fans after last week’s humiliation at the Camp Nou in Spain.
It was Origi who opened scores at the 6th minute of play. The 1-0 lead saw them through the first half of the game. During the second half, Jüggen Klopp took out Robertson and brought in Wijnaldum. Wijnaldum scored the second goal at the 49th minute and got his brace at the 56th minute of play. At this stage, Liverpool FC levelled as the two sides were now in a 3-3 tie on aggregate. Barca still remained dangerous as the least goal from them could spoil the night for Liverpool.
At a time when many were looking forward to a Barcelona break or a possible prolongation, Origi benefited from a fast play corner kick, coupled with a defensive misunderstanding at the Spanish backyard to fire in the fourth goal of the night. This sent the Liverpool fans in wild ecstasy and the Barcelona fans in total disarray. At 4-0, 4-3 on aggregate, FC Barcelona was still hoping for one goal to qualify. Unfortunately for them, neither Lionel Messi, the King of Football or Luis Suarez found the back of the Liverpool net. All attempts met with a well construed defense mechanism that was specially designed to ward off any danger.
Liverpool FC are therefore through to the final of the 2019 UEFA Champions League. They will play against the winner of the Ajax of Amsterdam Vs Tottenham Hotspur return leg tomorrow in Holland. Ajax have a 1-0 advantage against the English visitors from last week. Should Tottenham Hotspur win, it will be a 100% English affair in this year’s final. The final is scheduled to take place on the 1st of June, 2019 at Madrid in Spain.
