Uefa Champions League 2019: Ajax Stands Tall Against Juventus, Barca Beats Man. United
It was a palpitating football night in stadia across Europe this evening as two beautiful fixtures held televiewers spellbound around the world. In the match pitting Ajax of Amsterdam against Juventus of Turin, the two sides separated on a 1-1 tie in Amsterdam. Portuguese wonderboy, Christiano Ronaldo scored the opener at the 45th minute of play with a beautiful header that left Cameroonian international goalkeeper, Andre Onana stupefied. Upon return after the first half break, David Neres benefited from a fine counter attack to score the equalizer for Ajax of Amsterdam at the 46th minute.
Even though Ajax largely dominated the second half, they failed to score a second goal, putting them in a difficult position before their return leg next Tuesday, 16th April in Italy. With the advantage of an away goal, the Old Lady with her star man, Christiano Ronaldo, could capitalize on the home crowd to progress to the semi finals of this year’s UEFA Champions League. However, Ajax of Amsterdam can not be written off just yet, considering that they lost their home game to Real Madrid in the 16th Finals by 1- 2 before historically turning things around in Spain. Could they repeat History next week in Italy? The answer will be yours after that encounter.
The other fixture opposed FC Barcelona to Manchester United. The Spanish giants, though playing away from home succeeded to tear English hearts as they opened scores twelve minutes into the game through Luiz Suarez. The score line would remain unchanged till the final whistle of the game. Lionel Messi didn’t score on the night as his rival, Christiano Ronaldo did but helped his teammates to stay afloat before the second leg at home next Tuesday, 16th April, 2019. Manchester United will have to revise their noted on how they eliminated French giants, Paris Saint Germain at the 16th Finals in Paris after a 2-0 deficit at home.
The first legs of this year’s Quarter Finals have now been played and the balance sheet is interesting: only one team has secured an away win, FC Barcelona that is. Two teams have registered home wins without conceding a goal; Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur. There is a single draw with an away goal; Ajax and Juventus getting the away leg goal. The suspense and tension of the UEFA Champions League will therefore continue next week as this year’s final four shall be revealed by fire by force.
