Algeria: Abdelkader Bensalah Designated Interim President
The Algerian Parliament has nominated the Speaker of the Upper House, Abdelkader Bensalah, as the interim president to steer affairs at the helm of the State ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
Abdelkader who takes over from Bouteflika will have a period of 90 days to ensure transition expected to culminate with the election of a new president.
Despite the designation of an interim president, protests have continued in the capital city, Algiers. The protesters believe that the interim president is a product of Bouteflika's regime and thus, should quit power as well.
